Te Kaha Rangatahi Charitable Trust

Te Kaha Rangatahi Charitable Trust

Te Kaha Rangatahi is a mātauranga Maori grounded, health, education, and leadership programme. The aim of the programme is to help rangatahi through a very unique time in their life by using traditional Māori views of Te Ao.

The aim of our mahi is to work with the rangatahi of Heretaunga and provide them with the leadership skills, professional skills, and cultural identity to help them achieve their life aspirations. We will achieve these outcomes by using localized matauranga Maori, and teachings that are guided by both the Te Whare Tapa Wha and Te Wheke Māori health models.

Programmes offered

Awhitu mounga - Pursuit of excellence

The Awhitu mounga program is designed to engage with rangatahi that are year 10 and year 11 from local high schools. We will form small groups, with no more than 15 students in each. These dedicated students will collaborate with us once a week for eight weeks during each academic term, with the exception of the first and last weeks of each term. Our primary objective throughout each term is to foster the development of leadership, communication, and teamwork skills among these rangatahi. To be eligible for participation in our program, students must meet specific criteria set by their schools. These criteria include demonstrating the potential for leadership, maintaining an attendance rate of 75% or less, having experienced at least one pastoral care incident per term, and expressing a genuine desire to be a part of this enriching experience.

Te Kaha o rangatahi

The aim of Te Kaha o rangatahi is to nurture the leadership potential of young minds. In this program, we work closely with year 7 and 8 students from local high schools. With a commitment to quality education and mentorship, we limit each school group to no more than 30 students. We aim to engage with these rangatahi for four Fridays during every term. This consistent interaction allows us to foster their growth in three essential areas: leadership development, cultural identity, and the concept of tuakana teina, which embodies the spirit of mentorship.
