Memorial Requests

Members of the public can apply to place a commemorative feature on a park or reserve, such as a seat with a plaque or a tree.

For each request, Council will give consideration to the nature, number and location of memorial features within a park or reserve and whether the gift is appropriate for the reserve.

Council may not be able to facilitate every request for a memorial as assets need to be managed in a sustainable manner that is beneficial to the park or reserve and the community, and considers the cost of maintenance over the lifetime of the asset.

Memorial Types

Members of the public often request donation of a memorial seat with or without a plaque.  For consistency across the District the seat needs to be in one of Council’s standard designs, which will vary depending on the type of park or reserve.

You can request a particular location within a park or reserve, however some areas may not be suitable for a seat, or be too congested.  If the first choice is unavailable, Council officers will discuss this with you and may offer alternatives.

Once installed, the seat is maintained by Council.

Cost

The cost of a commemorative seat is approximately $3,500 and is subject to change depending on the cost of materials and labour.  This covers the cost of the seat, plaque and a contribution to the installation cost.  The cost may vary depending on the type of seat and installation requirements.

Plaque

Plaques are generally 100 x 250mm, have 15-25 words and are typically $300-350 each.

Members of the public can apply to donate a memorial tree.  Commemorative trees do not typically have a plaque.  Council officers will discuss appropriate tree species and location within a park or reserve.  If the first choice is unavailable, Council officers will discuss this with you and may offer alternatives.  Planting of memorial trees is typically undertaken over the winter planting season.

Cost

The cost for supply and installation of a memorial tree is approximately $250.  Trees are supplied by Council.

Memorial Installation

Family and friends can be present during installation of the memorial feature. There are often requests for installation at a particular date or time of year. Please include any preference for installation or planting, which will be accommodated if possible.
