Key points for consideration

  • Flooding: The existing structure was designed to accommodate regular flows. This will be a key aspect for the repairs planned.
  • Location: The bridge is approximately 40km North of Napier which introduces challenges getting plant and materials to site. 
  • Project timeline: The goal is to deliver a permanent repair by early 2025.

Background

The bridge at Arapawanui is a 12.6m two span bridge that was constructed in 1974 and was planned to have strengthening works completed the week of the cyclone.

Damage from the cyclone included the loss of several timber deck panels which were repaired shortly after to enable temporary access.
