HDC rubbish and recycling update

HDC CycloneGabrielle RubbishAndRecycling 003

Cyclone Gabrielle has caused major damage to our waste and recycling facilities. Ōmarunui Landfill has been closed due to flooding with no access available until yesterday.

Staff are currently working to rectify flood damage and make the site operational for Monday.

We had hoped to do a kerbside collection on Saturday, February 18, but because of the landfill closure this is not possible.

Kerbside rubbish collection will resume on Monday, February 20 – please put rubbish out on your usual collection day at the usual time.  If there are roading issues or the landfill is unable to open, we will not pick it up. Please take it back inside and store it until the following week.

Kerbside recycling collection has been paused until further notice, our contractors’ site was flooded and they are working to get their fleet back up and running. Please store recycling if it is safe to do so.  Green waste is lower down the priority list, with Bio Rich flooded we are reviewing options for disposal and there will be an update on this early next week.

Henderson Rd Transfer Station is at capacity and is currently closed to the public, only open to approved contractors that are carrying out essential services. If people have rubbish they urgently want to dispose of, official orange Council rubbish bags can be dropped off at the gate. Council orange rubbish bags are available at Hastings, Havelock North and Flaxmere New Worlds.

If the landfill can be re-opened on Monday, Henderson Rd Transfer Station will be re-opened as well.

For those dealing with flood-damaged waste - people who are insured should contact their insurer about the options available to them, and the process for assessing and disposing of flood damaged waste.

Solutions for people without insurance needing to dispose of flood-damaged waste are being explored and more information about this will be available early next week.

The implications for the management of waste in the coming week are a big focus for Council and we thank the community for their patience as we work through the best way to provide solutions.
