Canteen Aotearoa

Canteen Aotearoa

Canteen Aotearoa is a charity that provides free and tailored support to rangatahi aged 12-24 who are impacted by cancer. Whether they are dealing with their own diagnosis or cancer in their whānau (including rangatahi who have been bereaved). If you have been diagnosed with cancer, have a loved one with cancer, or have lost a loved one to cancer, Canteen can support you.

Canteen provides:

- connection with peers who understand what it’s like, through community events
- therapeutic support through a range of programmes and camps
- free individual support through our team of youth workers, psychologists, counsellors, and social workers
- online support services for rangatahi and whānau
- skill building and development through a range of pathways and programmes

Programmes offered

Leadership - for all rangatahi aged 16 and over, we offer a program to help them develop their leadership skills, including fun events and a camp.
Robots program - rangatahi who are stuck in hospital and are unable to attend school, we can set them up with a robot to attend school on their behalf. The robot is connected to the rangatahi through the internet, and thus the rangatahi is able to still attend school if they want, and can remain connected to their peers throughout an incredibly difficult experience.
Explore camp - this is a psychosocial camp that combines recreational activities with group-based skill-building.
Big Picture - group art therapy program.
SPACE - connection program for rangatahi who have cancer currently to connect with one another.
Places You'll Go - therapeutic program discussing what survivorship and life post-cancer will look like for you.
Sensing Our Grief - for rangatahi who are bereaved, this is a group therapeutic program to help you understand your loss.
TRUCE - this is a group therapeutic program for people whose parents are currently on treatment.
CanQueer - online social programme connecting rainbow rangatahi and allies together.
