Roads and parks under water

Hastings District Council will be closing Taihape Road from 5pm tonight due to surface flooding, and reassessing conditions at 9am tomorrow [Wednesday 13 June].

With another twelve roads in the Tutira and Kaweka areas also closed due to slips and surface water levels, Council is urging drivers to take care on roads as heavy rain and strong winds cause wide-spread issues including minor surface flooding, slips and fallen trees

“The combination of intense periods of rain and strong winds has impacted on a significant number of roads across the district, and while the majority of roads remain open, we are asking drivers to take extreme care due to variable road and driving conditions,” said Hastings District Councillor Kevin Watkins.

“We are continuing to monitor the situation in partnership with the Hawke’s Bay Civil Defence, and have had teams out inspecting roads today. We are expecting further heavy falls overnight so the key advice to drivers is to avoid travel wherever possible, and do not attempt to drive through flood waters.”

In addition to impacts on the roading network, the accumulated rainfall has flooded parks and reserves, with a number of trees down.

“We ask the community to avoid parks and reserves – the ground conditions are likely to be very wet and slippery, and we are aware of a few trees down, which will be cleared once conditions are safe to do so.”

Hastings District Council asks the community to report incidences of surface flooding, fallen trees or other damage to infrastructure within the Hastings District by calling Council’s 24-hour contact centre on 06 871 5000. Where there is an imminent threat to person or property, people should call emergency services immediately on 111.

Road closures can be viewed on our Road Works page.
