Plans for pirate ship replacement

The old pirate ship at Splash Planet destroyed by fire this month could be replaced in time for the 2016 summer season.

Splash Planet Manager, Peran Hutchings, said the hunt was on for potential replacement play features, with a report outlining the options to be prepared for council.

Council’s insurer has advised that an exact replacement of the pirate ship is not required, leaving the options relatively open. The 20-metre ship was insured for $354,000.

Three teenagers had been charged over the fire, which destroyed the wooden ship on April 5.

It was built in 1977, 10 years after the opening of Fantasyland, which became Splash Planet.
