Heretaunga Women's Centre at the Hastings Women's Rest building re-opens on Monday

The Heretaunga Women’s Centre at the Hastings Women’s Rest building re-opens on Monday after a major renovation. The Centre will once again be a vibrant community hub for local women.

The Hastings District Council, the Heretaunga Women’s Centre and many community organisations have worked successfully together to ensure the historic Women’s Rest has a fresh, light, welcoming and warm interior.

Heretaunga Women’s Centre Society Chair, Genevieve Beech says “The Women’s Rest is a building that many local women remember fondly, but the interior was dark, cold and worn. The building has been transformed by opening up internal rooms and creating new reception, office and kitchen spaces. It has fit-for-purpose heating, lighting and furnishings. The new spaces can now be used for a variety of purposes. We encourage all local women to visit the Centre and have a look around.”

Hastings Mayor Lawrence Yule says “The Women’s Rest is a Category 1 heritage building. It opened in 1921 and was the first purpose-built women’s rest rooms in Australasia. This refurbishment means the building and its services will continue to be an important part of Hastings’ social fabric.”

Women’s Centre Service Manager, Margot Wilson says, “The Centre offers a wide variety of services including information and support, counselling, a legal clinic, mothers groups, personal, professional and wellbeing courses and exercise groups. We also have rooms for other local community groups and practitioners to use. We are a volunteer-based organisation where women offer their skills for the benefit of others. We invite women to come along and get involved.”

The Women’s Rest upgrade also received support from the Eastern & Central Community Trust, Vavasour Charitable Trust, Anne Marie O’Sullivan Foundation, Bernard Chambers Trust, Gwen Malden Trust, Sanderson Trust, Hawke’s Bay Foundation, Holcim and the Pam Torbett Trust.

The Heretaunga Women’s Centre will be open from Monday 30 March, 9am to 4pm Monday - Friday.

NEWS MEDIA ARE INVITED TO THE OPENING CEREMONY AT 5.30PM FRIDAY 27TH MARCH
