Fresh look for HN Library

It is the Havelock North Library’s turn for a revamp, with plans being drawn up over the next few months.

“How best to lay the building out in relation to how the library is used both now and into the future is the focus,” said libraries’ manager Paula Murdoch.

“But before we begin that bigger project, there are a few maintenance issues to address before Christmas.”

The old skylights above the non-fiction collection will be removed on Monday 7 December.

“The skylights leak and cause damage to both the collection and the carpet,” said Mrs Murdoch.

The library will be open as normal but there will be restricted access to the non-fiction collection to ensure no risk to public while the building work is being done.

Other changes already underway include upgrading the old after-hours book returns chute to a more book-friendly material such as stainless steel.

This slot will now be used for after-hours returns only; it will not be used during opening hours.

The change is both for security reasons and to ensure library users on the other side of the returns slot can enjoy their time in the library without a constant barrage of books dropping into the bin, says Mrs Murdoch.

“It is rather disruptive for users in this area when books are banging into the trolleys behind them and staff have to retrieve books continually during the day – particularly as this area is reserved as one of the library’s quieter spaces, used for research and computer access.”

The Havelock North plan is part of a project to upgrade all of Hastings libraries; both the Flaxmere and Hastings libraries have undergone a revamp in the last two years.
