A fire extinguisher scam thought to be operating in Hastings today actually happened earlier this year. Hastings District Council staff acted on information that a scam was operating in Hastings’ main street today but investigations have revealed the scammers were here in March.

Shop keepers are only discovering today that the men they were approached by in March were fraudsters.

Hastings will welcome 33 new New Zealanders at a citizenship ceremony to be held tomorrow (Wednesday 2 September) from 5pm in the Hastings District Council Chamber.

Kaumatua, Mr Jim Whaanga will welcome those present on behalf of tangata whenua, with entertainment provided by the Hastings Intermediate Kapa Haka Group.

Hawke’s Bay District Health Board has had its application to move the Springhill Addiction Centre from Napier to Hastings approved by the Hastings District Council - subject to conditions.

HBDHB applied to change the use of a former resthome, across the road from Cornwall Park, into a residential alcohol and drug addiction treatment centre as the existing Springhill facility in Morris Street, Napier was no longer fit for this use.

Eight fires in the Hastings district over the past three weeks have sparked concern among local fire officials.

Fire restrictions are not normally of concern at this time of the year, but strong winds coupled with fine weather and dry vegetation has proven to be the perfect combination for recent fires which have gotten out of control.

A Hastings District Council community forum in September will provide attendees with knowledge as well as practical skills to help them raise funds for their charity or community groups.

The forum focusing on fundraising will be held in the Council Chamber at 207 Lyndon Street East on Friday, 4th September from 11am - 1:30pm
