How-to

Recycling is relatively simple but there can be stigma around what and what not to recycle. Click on the links below to learn more about correct recycling practices.

Presenting your recycling

Place your kerbside recycling in shopping bags or small crates. Large containers like wheelie bins won’t be picked up due to the health and safety risk they pose to the recycling collectors.

Green Bins

Hastings District Council has undergone big changes in its rural recycling. Green Bin recycling containers can now be found in multiple sites around the district. Hastings District Council Green Bins provide an effective recycling system that is user friendly, safe and easy to maintain. Once full, these bins are easily loaded up on the back of a truck for straightforward transportation and emptying.

There are currently 6 sites open for Green Bin recycling with a further two in development.

These are as follows:

  • Martin Place, Havelock North
  • Waimarama Domain, Waimawama
  • Black Bridge transfer station, Clive
  • Pukehamoamoa
  • Tutira
  • Pokawa
  • Patoka (in development)
  • Maraekakaho (in development)

Orange rubbish bags

Hastings District Council rubbish collectors only accept kerbside refuse in orange council rubbish bags. Private wheelie bin operators are separate from council services. 40 and 60 litre bags can be purchased at any one of the registered sellers on the list below. This is a user-pays system where you pay only for what you throw away. The cost of the bag includes the collection on rubbish days and free disposal at either the Henderson Road or Blackbridge Transfer Stations.

Bags should be placed on the kerbside by 7:30am on your collection day. The maximum acceptable weight for any bag is 10kg, however there is no limit to the number of official bags you can put out for collection each week.

Bags will not be accepted if they contain the following:

  • ·        Hot ash
  • ·        Hazardous materials
  • ·        Sharp objects
  • ·        Garden waste

It is illegal to place your rubbish outside another property.
