Lightening up the park

The paths in Cornwall Park are about to be lightened up with some judicious thinning of the greenery.

Hastings District Council maintenance staff will start on the work this Thursday (July 2).

“The native shrubs and trees in this area are very dense, making visibility difficult and creating safety problems for people walking through. This in turn results in other park users avoiding this area, adding to the seclusion and lack of surveillance,” said council’s parks manager Colin Hosford.

The thick bush also meant there was a lack of a clear line of sight from the John Holt Memorial Display House, otherwise known as the begonia house, through to the Osmanthus Garden.

“That restricts awareness of this area for new visitors, as well of discouraging locals from using this entrance.”

The focus of the work is on protecting the mature specimen trees, while opening up the paths by removing smaller shrubs and trees.
