It is almost show time. Hastings City Assist chaps are growing their beards just as fast as they can before the Great Shave Off at the end of November.
Their efforts are for a good cause – raising funds for the Child Cancer Foundation. They started off with a target of $5000, and with near $2000 already banked they are looking for more help from the public. As well as receiving public donations they have raised funds through events, including a quiz night and exercise class.
Chris Bartlett, BJ Pui, James Haronga and Mike Godinet started growing their beards in May, committing to being hairy for seven months. November 26 is the ‘shave it off date’. And it will be done in public, at the Thursday night market in the central city, at about 6pm.
The council staff members, who spend their working day patrolling the city centre to keep it safe, have the backing of Hastings District Council, the Child Cancer Foundation and the central city retailers. Collection boxes are available in Briscoes, Rebel Sports, Hastings RSA and the Clearance Shed.
Cash from the Child Cancer Foundation’s annual funrazor goes to the Child Cancer Foundation which helps children with cancer and their families
Team member Mike Godinet said they had “all known someone who has been through this journey, some more closely than others, and would like to do their bit.”
