Lions clean up riverside

Clean up: The Havelock North Village Lions Club cleaned up the River Rd area alongside the Tukituki River.

Gloves were donned and rubbish sacks filled by members of The Havelock North Village Lions Club, supported by Hastings District Council.

The crew, with an average age of 70, cleared rubbish along the Tukituki River, in the River Rd area.

Their initiative was part of the Lions International’s ‘Worldwide Week of Service to Protect our Planet’, celebrating 100 years of Lions Clubs across the world.

Seven Havelock North Lions, Nigel Ellingham, Mike Newman, Warren Mason, Cynthia Prince, Marie Nichol, Shirley Ellingham and Jeanette Odell collected six bags of rubbish, said spokesperson Nigel Ellingham. Clearing up after others were  

As well as litter the team found dumped concrete. The bulk of the rubbish found was in grass around the car park area.

The river clean up came on the back of street clean ups the 15-strong club had carried out.
