Arts Festival: Shows selling fast

Arts’ lovers won’t want to miss out on tickets for the Harcourts Hawke’s Bay Arts Festival, opening on October 27. With nine shows having sold out and others nearing full capacity, event organisers say they are delighted with the response to the inaugural festival.

Festival Director, Pitsch Leiser says people may miss out on some acts if they don’t get in quickly. “The Festival’s venue, The Famous Spiegeltent only seats 300, so if people leave it until the last minute to book shows, they may be disappointed.”

Perennial favourites such as The Modern Maori Quartet are selling strongly with the Saturday night show already sold out and only limited tickets left for the Sunday night show.

All eight performances of Back of the Bus, a dance show performed on the back of a moving bus, have sold out. The hit show by New Zealand’s Java Dance Company is one of three different performances the company is bringing to Hawke’s Bay for the festival.

“Hawke’s Bay people clearly have an appetite for experiencing something a little different and attending a dance performance on a moving bus is certainly unique,” says Mr Leiser. “Fortunately, Java Dance is bringing two other original shows to the festival – The Wine Project, a late-night, adult-only dance show and for families, Dirt and other Delicious Ingredients, a magical dance show set in a land of spice.”

Irish music legend Roesy is attracting strong sales for his opening night show Roesy + The Seisiun. “With a line-up that includes some of Ireland’s most acclaimed Irish musicians and dancers, it’s no surprise that this show has nearly sold out,” says Mr Leiser.

Limited seats are also available for Pass the Gat, with former Havelock North High School student Thomas Oliver performing alongside celebrated musicians Warren Maxwell and Louis Baker. Two musical acts with two very different styles will bring the festival to a close on Sunday the 8th of November. Local songstress Margot Wuts is proving to be popular with her tribute to singing legend Nina Simone almost sold out, while later in the evening, Lyttleton-based band The Eastern will bring the festival to a roaring close.

With more than two weeks to go until the festival opens, Festival Director Pitsch Leiser says sales have exceeded expectations. “Given the huge response we’ve had to date, people are obviously excited about the festival and there’s clearly a demand for high-quality arts offerings in Hawke’s Bay.”
