Tools for the teenage years out now

Positive Parenting Booklet 2018 News SmallA region-wide resource designed to help parents make it through the sometimes tricky teenage years has been launched this week.

Tools for the Teenage Years, which will also be available online from that date, was officially launched at the Waipawa Municipal Theatre on Wednesday (January 24).

The booklet is an updated version of one first created by Napier City Council’s Community Services directorate.

Parents and teens from a diverse range of backgrounds and cultures living in Hawke’s Bay were asked if it would be useful, and what they would like to see included in it. The positive response was overwhelming.

The four local authorities – Hastings, Napier, Central Hawke’s Bay and Wairoa councils – have worked together on Tools for the Teenage Years. This version includes new topics and provides helpful tips and information on, for example, cyber safety, careers and relationships, and which agencies and websites can help parents navigate these years with their teen.

Past versions of this booklet have been hugely popular, says Natasha Carswell, Manager Community Strategies, Napier City Council. “It’s a short, snappy guide that brings all the information together in one resource, making it a great place to start when you are wanting to know what the facts are, and how to get more help if you need it.”

Catherine Burgess, who has three teenagers, says the resource is well worth a look. “Much of the information is common sense, really, but it’s reassuring to have these reminders, particularly what ages kids legally can and can’t do particular things.”

Rosie Clibborn, 16, was quick to accept an invitation to appear in the booklet because she “thought it could help a lot of people”.

“It has covered everything a parent or caregiver would need to help them understand and be able to communicate better with their teen,” she said.

Hastings Mayor Sandra Hazlehurst is also a strong supporter. “Being able to support parents to guide our young people through often challenging years is so important.”

Central Hawke’s Bay Mayor Alex Walker, who hosted the launch, said being a parent to a teenager is one of the most important but scariest jobs. “I am proud to be part of regional leadership which recognises that supporting parents in this job is crucial to the success of our young people.”

Similar booklets have been produced by other councils and district health boards throughout New Zealand but this is the only one of its kind available in Hawke’s Bay.

Printed copies will be given to service providers who work with young people and their families.
