Principal Scientist – Isotope Hydrology/Water Dating

Uwe leads the GNS Water Dating Laboratory and several research programs for understanding the hydrologic cycle. His scientific expertise centres on the use of isotopic methods, such as tritium and 32Si, for determination of the age of water, ice, and sediments.

Water dating is an effective tool for:

  • understanding groundwater recharge areas, flow paths, aquifer structure, and water mixing;
  • monitoring of groundwater quality;
  • monitoring of geothermal production fields; and
  • determining drinking water security.
